PRACTICE PROFILE
Greg Pun is the firm’s Director of Research and heads the Appeals Practice Advisory Team. As research lawyer, his practice is primarily focused on providing research memoranda to colleagues, and assisting in the preparation and drafting of opinion letters and trial arguments. As head of the Appeals Practice Advisory Team, he assists lawyers inside and outside the firm, in the preparation of all appeal materials (including chambers), and in appellate advocacy. He has appeared as counsel in the B.C. Supreme Court, B.C. Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court of Canada. He also assists with ASCEND, the firm’s in-house continuing legal education program. In 2008-2010 he was the Law Officer for the B.C. Court of Appeal.
Mr. Pun is founding chair of the Appellate Advocacy section of the CBA – B.C. Branch and two time past chair of the Legal Research section.
Mr. Pun is co-author of several legal books: The Law of Nuisance in Canada (LexisNexis Butterworths, 2010); The Annotated British Columbia Law and Equity Act (Canada Law Book, 1999, updated annually); The Annotated British Columbia Builders Lien Act - 2007 (Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C.); and The Annotated Unemployment Insurance Act, 1993 (Carswell).
REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE
- Squamish Indian Band v. Capilano Mobile Park (hearing in B.C. Court of Appeal, February 7, 2012): commercial land use dispute.
- Jesse v. The Queen (assisting G.D. McKinnon, Q.C., hearing in Supreme Court of Canada, December 9, 2011): criminal conviction appeal; admissibility of similar fact evidence.
- Williams v. College Pension Board of Trustees, 2007 BCCA 19 - non-certification of proposed class proceeding as disclosing no cause of action.
- Fire Productions Ltd. v. Lauro, 2006 BCCA 497 - restored arbitrator’s decision in favour of landlord on renewal of a commercial lease.
- Yeung (Guardian ad litem of) v. Au, 2006 BCCA 217 - held motor vehicle leasing company vicariously liable for accident caused by lessee; previous Court of Appeal judgment on issue overruled.
- Jackson v. King, 2006 BCCA 563 - upheld charging clause in will allowing executors to be reimbursed from estate for fees owed to executors’ lawyers.
- Lions Gate Marketing Co. Ltd. v. Used Car Dealers Assoc. of Ontario, 2004 BCCA 354 - motion for directions as to whether appeal was as of right or required leave.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
Mr. Pun has practised Yoshinkan Aikido for over 15 years in Toronto, Vancouver, and Japan. He trained for one year (2003) at the international headquarters (Hombu Dojo) in Tokyo where he obtained his 1st degree black belt and level 1 instructor licence. He currently has his 4th degree black belt and level 4 instructor licence. He teaches adults and children and has participated in training seminars in Japan, Brazil, Malaysia, the U.S., and Canada. He is a dilettante in rock climbing (indoor and outdoor), basketball, and tennis.
He is a keen traveller and has made trips to Europe, Africa, South America, Australia, and Asia. He is also a keen learner of languages and is now functionally illiterate in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese.
Mr. Pun plays guitar and bass with the Alexander Holburn band, “All Hell Breaking Loose”.
