People: James Ball

PRACTICE PROFILE

James Ball is an associate lawyer in the firm’s Aviation Group.  His practice is predominantly litigation-based with a focus on aviation law.

James received a Diploma of Aviation and Flight Technology from Seneca College in 2001, a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from McMaster University in 2006 and his LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 2009. Before joining Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP, he articled with a large regional firm in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

James is a licensed commercial pilot and prior to attending law school, worked as an air ambulance, charter and cargo pilot in Northern Manitoba and Nunavut and has held a number of other positions in the aviation industry.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCES

James has acted for clients in Small Claims Court, the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court and the Tax Court of Canada.

He has assisted pilots and airlines with respect to administrative matters with Transport Canada, the Transportation Safety Board, the Canadian Transportation Agency, the Canadian Human Rights Commission, WorksafeBC and the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal.

RECENT PUBLICATIONS

James is the author of So, You Want to be a Pilot, Eh? - A Guidebook for Canadian Pilot Training which was published in 2007 as part of Writing On Stone Press’ Canadian Career Series.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

In his spare time, James enjoys travelling, biking and tending nets in both ice and floor hockey. He also enjoys keeping updated with the latest developments in aviation and has participated in speaking engagements regarding the industry.
