PRACTICE PROFILE

William Holburn, QC is a Partner in the firm and heads the firm’s Insurance Law and Commercial Litigation Practice Groups. He obtained his law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1967 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1990.  Mr. Holburn’s practice is primarily focused on insurance and reinsurance law, as well as commercial and class action litigation.

Mr. Holburn is recognized by the Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in commercial insurance litigation and personal injury, and as one of the top lawyers in Canada in the area of product liability.  In addition, he was ranked Most Frequently Recommended for 2009 by the Lexpert Directory.  Mr. Holburn has also been selected by his peers for inclusion in the publication, The Best Lawyers in Canada, since its commencement in 2006. He has also been recognized by LEXPERT as a leading Canadian lawyer for 2011.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

Mr. Holburn acts as counsel to major insurance companies operating in North America. He has, on behalf of Canadian underwriters, been supervisory counsel on litigation conducted in several states of the United States of America and in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Holburn has represented underwriters in the Courts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has handled many high profile insurance cases including Campbell v. Flexwatt, the first class action suit to proceed in British Columbia, coverage arbitration arising from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and most recently, a billion dollar claim in Western Canada’s energy sector.

Mr. Holburn has written and lectured extensively on various topics and has on several occasions served as chairperson of conferences on insurance law. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Societies of British Columbia and Alberta.
