Responsiveness

Responsive client service from outside legal counsel is a key issue for many local governments and public institutions.  We recognize the importance our clients place on the efficient delivery of legal services in order to effectively manage their operations and to respond appropriately to time-sensitive issues.  We strive to deliver legal solutions on a timetable that works to our clients' advantage.

Geography

For clients located outside the Lower Mainland, we offer the reassurance that your legal requirements are no less significant for that fact.  We recognize that the need for responsive service and informed legal advice is not dependent on geography.  We regularly travel through the province and beyond to meet and work with our clients where they operate, so that we may better understand their operations, their communities, and their issues.

Cost

We also maintain that it is important to be available in our clients' communities at a reasonable cost.  For that reason we do not charge clients located outside the Lower Mainland for travel time, except in unusual circumstances.

Technology

The Local Government Practice Group makes extensive use of current technologies to assist in the efficient delivery of legal services.  We utilize cell phones and hand-held e-mail devices to keep the lines of communication open with our clients.  Our library services and in-house Research & Reference team are also available to assist clients with a wide variety of information needs that may not be readily accessible in their own communities.

Breadth

Our work on behalf of clients throughout British Columbia extends beyond municipal law to other public sector clients and to major industry groups within the province such as oil and gas, forestry and transportation.  We regularly draw upon the expertise and skills of other lawyers and professionals within the firm to advise and assist clients in specialized areas such as environmental law, aviation, marine law, construction and tendering.  This broad involvement with our clients outside of the Lower Mainland allows us to actively engage with the many communities we serve and to gain a better understanding of the milieu in which our clients operate.

Community Involvement and Continuing Education

The practice group is actively involved as speakers with the Local Government Management Association of British Columbia, the Municipal subsection of the B.C. Bar Association and the North Central Municipal Association among others.  We also regularly present complimentary on-site client seminars on current legal issues and topics of interest for clients who may not otherwise have ready access to regular professional development opportunities in their home communities.
