Programs: Women's Forum

Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP is committed to the professional and personal growth of our lawyers and clients.  One of the ways we honour this commitment is through our Women’s Forum.   Our Women’s Forum offers a chance for our female clients, lawyers, and management to network, share ideas, and listen to inspirational speakers!

Memorable, Meaningful Events

The Alexander Holburn Women’s Forum evolved from a simple, but important goal: to increase support for female professionals through social activity and information sharing.

By hosting unique events with engaging, relevant programs, our female clients and lawyers can explore networking, mentoring and business development opportunities. These opportunities lead to lasting, meaningful relationships both inside and outside the firm.

In 2007, we were thrilled to hear City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts to speak to our lawyers and clients on the challenges she has overcome and opportunities she has encountered in her personal and professional life.  Our lawyers and clients were also treated to a private jewellery showing by Alexander Holburn alumna and Sugarlime Jewellery creator Karen Buder.

In 2008, The Women’s Forum came together again to celebrate fashion while supporting two very worthwhile causes: Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life; and imagine1day, an innovative charity that connects donors to primary education projects in Ethiopia.

The evening concluded with a live fashion show featuring Canadian designers from Vancouver’s own Hum Clothing.

In 2009, we hosted two events including a fabulous night of mingling and fine arts with the Arts Club Theatre's production of Les Misérables and an afternoon of health and wellness tips for women featuring speakers from The Canadian Cancer Society and InspireHealth.

Sharing our Good Fortune

In keeping with our firm’s commitment to helping others in our city and province, the Forum proudly supports the West Coast Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, the BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, YWCA Munroe House and the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade, through financial donations and fundraising events.

Members of the Women’s Forum have also been working with imagine1day to raise $10,000 to build a latrine for school girls in Ethiopia. Why a latrine? Why girls? The assurance of privacy, safety and hygiene that a latrine provides encourages parents to send their girls to school. The education of girls contributes to higher economic productivity, lower infant mortality and fertility rates, and the attainment of longer life expectancy for women. When you educate a girl you educate her whole family. Piece by piece, from the foundation cement to the stall doors, we are committed to achieving our fundraising goal.  The latrine will be constructed alongside a brand new primary school in the community of Laelay Weste in Northern Ethiopia.  Through our efforts, this project will help over 200 girls attend school each year.

Charitable donations program:

Part of Alexander Holburn's operating budget is an allocation of funds for charitable giving.  As you can imagine, we receive literally hundreds of requests each year for support funding.  One of the deciding factors to help us select which of these worthy causes includes personal involvement by our own people. If a lawyer or staff member is on a board, or otherwise giving of his/her time or skills for a charitable cause, that significantly increases the chances that we will respond positively to charitable requests for that organization.  In this way, we help to reward and encourage grassroots involvement in such causes by our people.
