Practice Profile 

Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP maintains one of the largest insurance law practices in Canada. Our firm has been strongly rooted in insurance law for over 35 years.

We act for two primary client types: insurance companies and self-insured corporations. We are distinguished by our collective experience and expertise in virtually all areas of law encountered by our insurance clients. Insurers and self-insured corporations come to us comfortable in the knowledge that their matters will be handled effectively and efficiently.

Our Approach

We believe that delivering value to our clients is of paramount importance. We also believe in a solutions based approach to litigation management. Accordingly, in every case we work with our clients to identify and define their goals and develop a litigation strategy that best meets those goals. Depth of Resources

Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP provides our clients with access to a broad array of resources to utilize in the resolution of their claims. Our greatest resource is our people. Our depth allows our clients to select the lawyer or lawyers best suited for a particular case, to draw upon the skills of other lawyers in the firm with specific expertise in a given area and to respond quickly and effectively to matters as they arise.

Our lawyers are also backed by considerable technology resources and the benefit of an extensive in-house library and an electronic research archive.  We have a senior research lawyer on staff who manages the electronic research archive and is there to assist with unique and/or complicated research where required.

Representative Matters

  • Representation of excess insurers in a complex 700 million dollar business interruption claim arising from a fire loss.
  • Acted for underwriters in a multi-million dollar uranium mine loss.
  • Representation of insurers in a one billion dollar claim by an international mining company seeking insurance coverage for clean up of its mine sites and off-site pollution.
  • Successfully pursued to trial and appeal a multi-million dollar subrogated claim arising from an airport fire.
  • Representation of primary insurers in a 100 million dollar coverage dispute arising from the flood of a potash mine.
  • Successfully defended a municipality in a catastrophic injury case arising out of the use of public facilities.
  • Acted as counsel in the leading Supreme Court of Canada decision on the issue of vicarious liability for sexual assault.
  • Acted as coverage counsel in a one billion dollar environmental liability claim by a national oil company for clean up of oil fields, refineries, bulk plants and service stations.
  • Acted as counsel in a number of class action proceedings in British Columbia, including several class actions involving national and bi-national issues, the most recent being the negotiation and implementation of a 320 million dollar product liability settlement covering Canada and the United States.
