Extending the Period of Validity of Union Membership Cards

Extending the Period of Validity of Union Membership Cards

On April 6, 2020, the BC Government extended the length of time that a union has to obtain signed membership cards before applying to be certified to represent employees from 90 days to 6 months.  This will make it easier for unions to seek representation.

Employees should be aware that they have the right to revoke their union membership prior to the filing of the application by the union, but not after.  An employee seeking to revoke their support for the union must give notice in writing as provided for in the Labour Relations Regulations.  See OIC 171/2020 for the change.
