Welcome to the student section of the Alexander Holburn website. You are likely here because you are a law student looking for a place to article, either for the summer or for your articling year. As many articled students go on to spend significant portions of their careers with their articling firm, selecting with which firm to article can be a weighty decision. How do you decide?

Here are some “fast facts” about us to assist you in determining whether we are the right fit for you. For more information about our firm overall, please also see our Firm Overview.

We are a leading Vancouver-based Canadian law firm of nearly 100 lawyers. Our clients include people and corporations in virtually all sectors of the local, national and international economies. Our firm has been independently recognized for providing pre-eminent legal services to our clients. Martindale-Hubbell has given Alexander Holburn the highest possible rating for a law firm. We were also ranked as one of the top ten regional Western Canadian firms in Canadian Lawyer’s most recent survey. The Globe and Mail also mentioned Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang in their “Canada’s Best Law Firms List” for 2023.

ASCEND™ Training Program

One of the most comprehensive in-house training programs of law firms in the city, our ASCEND™ program includes over 100 sessions annually in law, technology, and business-related topics.

FOCUS™ Client Education Program

Our FOCUS™ Program is aimed at providing ongoing legal education to our clients in various industries, to assist with their risk management and accommodate their own professional development requirements.

Client Service Program

In order to provide superior client service, we have created a program which includes a client service promise, an annual client survey, newsletter, the Reach™ Award for outstanding client service by a staff member, and several additional initiatives.

Philanthropic Initiatives Program

We are proud to be an essential part of Vancouver’s commercial fabric and we recognize that our position creates excellent opportunities for us to give back. We do this through several programs we have developed, which align with the firm’s core values. Specifically, we have implemented a Philanthropic Initiatives Program to provide an opportunity for our lawyers and staff to volunteer and make a difference in our community.

Firm Tours + Events

Are you a student interested in learning more about Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP?

Starting in May we will be holding weekly “firm tours” throughout the summer months for small groups of interested law students. These events will give students an opportunity to speak with some of our lawyers and students, including Partner and Director of Associate + Student Programs, Christine York.  These sessions will provide students with a more comprehensive introduction to our firm and an opportunity to ask questions about recruiting, summering, and articling.

Other Events

Occasionally, we conduct other events for students or are invited to speak at student-related events. Details of such events are typically available through your law school.

Scholarships

An important aspect of Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP’s community outreach program is our emphasis on doing what we can to contribute towards education. We award a number of scholarships to students at various BC universities. These scholarships are awarded not just for academic excellence, but also to students who demonstrate a strong sense of community involvement. Peter A. Allard School of Law (UBC)

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang William M. Holburn, K.C. Award
An entrance scholarship is offered by Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP in honour of founding Partner, William M. Holburn, Q.C. The scholarship is awarded to a student entering the J.D. program who demonstrates academic excellence.

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang Stuart Lang Award in Law

An award made available annually by Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang in honour of F. Stuart Lang, for outstanding students entering the J.D. Program who have an interest in business.

The Kenneth H. Crook Memorial Scholarship in Law
A $2,500 scholarship is offered by Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP in memory of their esteemed colleague and friend Kenneth H. Crook. Ken’s commitment to excellence in his practice and his display of courage and compassion throughout life’s challenges were an inspiration to all those who knew him. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law to a student entering the second year of the J.D. program with high academic standing.

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP Prize in Torts
A $1,000 scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law to a student who achieves high standing in first year torts.

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP Scholarship in memory of Ernie Alexander, Q.C.
This $1,000 award is given to a student completing second year law, with high academic standing, who is in financial need and who demonstrates, by his or her involvement in student or community affairs, a concern for others.

University of Victoria Faculty of Law

The Kenneth H. Crook Memorial Scholarship in Law
(As per above.)

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP Entrance Scholarship in Law
The firm provides one or more entrance scholarships totalling $2,500 to a student or students entering the Faculty of Law. Awards are made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Law.

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP Scholarship
The firm provides a $1,000 scholarship to a student completing the second year of the J.D. program who has achieved high academic standing and who has demonstrated the qualities required for the practice of law.

Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law

The Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP Scholarship
A $3,000 scholarship awarded annually upon recommendation of the Faculty of Law to a first year student who demonstrates overall academic achievement and has demonstrated professionalism and community involvement.

VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES

Alexander Holburn is proud to partner with BC Soccer’s Scholarship program by sponsoring the Alexander Holburn Scholarship. Through this program, we help further the education of players and referees wishing to proceed to post-secondary education, who might otherwise not have had the chance to do so.

AVIATION STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Ernie Alexander Memorial Aviation Scholarship
In memory of the late Ernie Alexander, Q.C. and for his contributions to aviation in British Columbia, we are pleased to offer a $2,000 scholarship in his name. One of the founding partners of Alexander Holburn, Ernie was a talented trial lawyer, legendary pilot and valued educator who had a reputation as a charming individual. This award will be presented to an Aviation or Aerospace student who demonstrates achievement in his or her community and excels academically.
