We handle a broad range of sophisticated real estate transactions. We take a practical, business-oriented approach to our clients’ needs and value the many long-term client relationships we have built over the years. We are grateful for the trust our clients place in us and understand the responsibility that comes with that trust.

Clients

Our clients include real estate developers, property owners, property managers and a range of public and private sector entities. For some clients, real estate is their core business. For others, it is an integral part of a broader mandate. Representative clients in the latter group include a major railroad company, a major oil company and a number of hospitals and provincial health authorities.

Our Work

Much of our work involves the acquisition, development, leasing, operation and disposition of a range of properties including shopping centres, hotels, office buildings, condominium and apartment buildings, industrial properties, commercial properties, health care facilities and resorts.

Among other matters, our lawyers handle land assemblies, zoning and other land use issues, property tax assessment appeals, subdivisions (including air space parceling), financings, construction contracts, joint ventures, partnerships, limited partnerships and insolvency arrangements. Our real estate-related litigation includes environmental litigation, mortgage enforcement proceedings and landlord-tenant disputes, as well as arbitrations and mediations.

Property Tax Assessments

The tax burden of rising property values makes it important that owners be alert to the property assessment process. The owners we have represented on assessment and property tax matters include hospitals, telecommunications providers and resource companies. In the course of that representation, we have appeared before the British Columbia Property Assessment Appeal Board, the British Columbia Supreme Court, the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
